Cezary Stulgis

Artist Statement
Questions surrounding the human condition, society and identity, it’s complex dialogue of finely intertwined mechanisms, from status to class to consumerism and throw-away mentality. I am interested in questioning things that have exceeded their original function. What gives us our values, our freedom/s, our knowledge and self worth? Can art be the tool to question what’s right and correct, and what is illicit and illegal? I deliberately use sub-aesthetic and found materials in a blunt way to call into question the traditional hierarchies and distinctions between art mediums, aesthetics and our normal associations with the nature of materials, and their industrial origins. I draw my inspiration from nature, the archetypes of social realism and the energetic calligraphy of street art, the human form, contemporary society and our everyday surroundings.
